How do you power up a salad?

Salad can be a great gateway vegetable. However JUST eating a salad won’t do, especially for student-athletes.

Recently an athlete asked me what they could add to their lettuce leaves. Here are some ideas.

More Color: It can be more vegetables or fruits in any way, shape or form. This particular salad has dried figs. Some other ideas: other raw fruits or veggies, leftover vegetable blends from a previous meal, salsa (which can help double as a dressing!), fresh or dried fruit, and fruit or veggie “chips” for a little crunch too.

Healthy Fats: Healthy fats can not only be a way to get your fat intake in, it also helps with fullness! Try an oil-based dressing, avocado, nuts or seeds, or even a fatty fish such as tuna or salmon; which also covers your protein needs.

Carbohydrates!: If you know me, you know I want you to have some carbohydrates on that plate. Maybe a side sandwich or a big hunk of whole-grain bread. Maybe you even add some grains such as farro or bulgar to the lettuce itself! Whatever you do, don’t skip it!

Protein: Protein is another must have, especially if you are making this your main dish. Sure it can be meat like the chicken you see here but also consider items like beans (also works as a carbohydrate source!), tofu, and cheese!

Did you miss yesterday's chat on Pre-Workout?

Yesterday we discussed how valuable having a pre-workout plan can be:

- It tops off energy stores to help you power through your workout physically AND mentally.

- It starts the recovery process!

We also discussed how what you eat depends on what kind of time you have.

This post covers 60 minutes or less which includes hydration + quick digesting carbohydrates.

Hydration: the best option is to stay hydrated throughout the day. In the minutes leading up to activity, consume about 4-8 ounces (though I must say it is different for everyone!)

Quick Digesting Carbohydrates: this includes options such as fruit, juice, crackers, pretzels, and honey!
